New York City Vacations

Upon arrival in New York City, one of your first stops as a tourist will probably be the top of the Empire State Building. While standing on the 86th-floor observatory and gazing at Manhattan and its four neighboring boroughs bustling far below, you will no doubt experience awe and wonder. Stops on your trip to New York City should include Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and a Broadway show, with breaks at some of the outstanding restaurants the city has to offer. For sports enthusiasts, a tour of Yankee Stadium is a must and if you like museums you will have a cornucopia to choose from such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum, and Museum of Modern Art.

The Waldorf Astoria

Hotel Information: Host to generations of royalty, US presidents, heads of states, socialites, and celebrities, The Waldorf Astoria has been one of the world's most well-known hotels for more than a century. The main lobby's expanse of mahogany, marble, and crystal exemplifies the hotel's Art Deco grandeur.

Insider tip: The hotel's Peacock Alley restaurant/bar commemorates a 300-foot marble promenade linking the original 1893 Waldorf with a 1897 addition, The Astor, at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. With ladies in plumage, finely dressed notables such as the Astors, the Vanderbilts, and the Whitneys strolled between the two buildings, leading a society columnist to bestow the name. (The original hotels were razed in 1929 to make room for the Empire State Building, and a new hotel--at the time, the world's largest--was constructed at the present site.)

The Waldorf Astoria offers 1,416 high-ceilinged guestrooms and suites in a 42-story building. English-manor-house decor includes formal window treatments and crystal-and-brass lamps. Beds are furnished with triple sheeting and down comforters. Amenities include two-line speakerphones, and high-speed Internet access (surcharge).

Other amenities include safes accommodating laptop computers, clock radios, and televisions offering pay movies (surcharge). Marble bathrooms contain shower/tub combinations or stall showers without tubs.
